Functions of ramp equipment
Six units described in the operational guide. Each function explains its role in aircraft movement on the ramp.
- Baggage Cart
- Non-motorized equipment designed to contain and transport passenger baggage, mail or loose cargo. They are linked together forming a train that is pulled between the terminal and the aircraft.
- Baggage Tractor
- Low-profile motorized vehicle with high traction used to pull or tow carts and other small support equipment from airport facilities to the ramp where the aircraft is parked.
- Waste Water Truck
- Specialized vehicle responsible for the aircraft lavatory service. It drains and empties the waste tanks of the aircraft and recharges the system with clean water and disinfectant liquid.
- Belt Loader
- Vehicle equipped with an adjustable conveyor belt that elevates to the cargo hold door of the aircraft. It facilitates the manual loading and unloading of suitcases and bulk cargo, preventing injuries.
- GPU
- Ground Power Unit. Provides electrical power to the aircraft while it is parked with engines off. Keeps the aircraft's electrical systems running without consuming fuel.
- ASU
- Air Start Unit. Provides high-pressure compressed air to assist in starting the aircraft's main engines, indispensable when the APU is inoperative.
